Waxwing's pre-Bitcoin exposure to cryptography was incidental: reading Simon Singh's The Code Book, noticing Windows 95 messages about 40-bit encryption, and fragmentary awareness of crypto wars treating cryptographic keys as munitions. Casual reading on RSA followed, but cryptography remained peripheral. Bitcoin fundamentally introduced Waxwing to cryptography as a field worth serious engagement.
