Lightning Network payment channels require secret balance splits—public balances would make every routed payment trivially deanonymizable at the network level. Channel probing attacks (Tikhomirov, Pickhardt et al.) discover exact balances by attempting payments from adjacent channels; rejected payments reveal insufficient funds on one side, enabling binary-search discovery with logarithmic steps.
